All the latest technological advances that are designed to make our job easier consequently can cause a bottleneck of information between the field and the office. Information programs that ease are jobs are out there; Live Drawings, 3/4d models and countless apps are phenomenal tools, giving us the power of real time information, stunning visuals or tools simply making our jobs easier. However, if we don’t supply the proper tools to utilize this information, it can create a major bottleneck. Referring to having the proper apps and tablets for the foreman, so they can process the information they way it was intended, not looking at their phone of a snapshot they took in the office. Therefore, why would should our leaders walk all the way back to the office to gather information? Are there saving’s by not buying the proper app? Or tablets for the field hands? How much money is being saved? Let’s ask ourselves this question: how much are we saving, by not supporting the field?
· If our foremen are to retrieve all the information from the office, which is a 15-minute route, and walks this six times a day equals three hours a day wasted on walking alone. How much is his time worth?
· What about the money neglected, due to rework, caused by not having up to date information, or due to the fact that they’ve already been to the trailer six times today, with a full plate a judgment call in the field as to avoid walking back to the office. Oppose thinking they are lazy, they had already walked to the office six times already and are working tirelessly to accomplish everything on their list, with little or no time to waste walking back to the office once again.
· What about the training? Technology is moving so rapidly, it’s difficult enough to keep pace with the technologies yesterday, further more the ones coming today and tomorrow will surely seal jeopardize their career, making them an inadequate leader in the future. If we want our foreman to be viable in the future, it’s a must to properly train them today keeping pace with technology.
I was going through some old files and ran into a picture I took back in 2008 of the new City Center in Vegas. There is just something about Las Vegas that makes everything just seem awesome!!!
Including the City Center, at first glance it seemed like a collapsed steel structure with mangled steel everywhere, yet when you look up close, it shows what an astounding feat it was to put this structure together. Design the coordination and labor that molded this highly technical steel structure together, was just absolutely amazing.
Glass will allow us to make hands on video's in the construction field, this is a video made by Google's Auto Awesome; collected from training video's I made teaching my daughter how to drive. The concept is awesome, hands free short video's that would be helpful for the crews in the field. Think about it, hands on video showing how to set and strip gang forms, shoring, door frames and all the how to videos we can have our shiny stars make to help train through their experience and their eyes! Glass is going to open up a whole new world for us.
There seems to be a lot more jobs nowadays that look like abandoned buildings, rather than construction sites.
We are missing a key ingredient-Manpower! The recession helped change people's mind about getting and staying out of construction. Now more than ever is the time to be flexible and treat employees for what they are; a valuable resource!!!
Trimble's SketchUp has become such a valuable tool for construction in numerous ways, written in the list above are just some of the uses for SketchUp. Yet, something this dynamic can be set up in a matter of minutes, where you become the architect for what you're building and how to form it. Imagine if the construction foreman can learn to tap this resource to enhance his knowledge and skills. Definitely giving the foreman a cutting edge to help with production and career advancement. Instead of spending days to produce lift drawings on paper, SketchUp can easily produce quality drawings, giving your crews the visualization to simply plan and produce, for you to upload on your tablet as your walking the site.
