Create a Plan
We have all been on jobs that seem to be a complete disaster; unorganized, behind schedule, everyone working on top of each other, unsafe, deviant morale and no sight of job flow. So how do we set up a job to avoid what seems like a firefighting atmosphere? We can start with making a plan that works-
- First- set job goals and milestones at the beginning of the job.
- Second- involve everyone; get them all to buy into your plan, also get feedback to ensure you have a correct sequencing plan for the job.
- Third- Define and assign the task that capture the who, what, when and how's.
- Fourth- set up tracking tools to monitor and track all the key tasks that will ensure you hit your milestones.
- Fifth- As you monitor and track your progress don't be afraid to make changes; like chess- sometimes you have to sacrifice the King to save your Queen. You have to have the flexibility to make the necessary changes when delays and impacts get in the way of achieving your initial plan.

Flexibility
- Smart Goals- Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.
- Need to be specific and challenging.
- Set up the short and long term goals.
- As a team having tracking measures – production tools.
- Don’t, let one person dictate the conversation- keep it fair and positive- never say that’s a bad idea, that’s the quickest way to shut down an open discussion.
- Remember, the more ideas the better.
- All ideas are acceptable- no matter how far out in left field they might seem.
- Never criticize or downplay an idea.
- Ask for any addition feedback, can email call etc. (Sometimes great ideas get left behind in the presents of a group).
Building a Team Committed to Obtaining Your Goals
- Planning to develop a commitment to goals.
- If workers don’t care about a goal, the goal won’t encourage them to work harder.
- If employees are involved in goal setting, they will own it and perform to achieve the goal.
Planning
- Who- is needed in order to accomplish the goal.
- What- can affect our goals; how to mitigate it.
- When- is the goal completion date.
- How- to accomplish the goal more efficiently.
Monitoring
- Set up the short and long term goals.
- Get feedback; see what is going well and why, also what went wrong and why.
- Use production tools to track progress and efficiency’s, sharing with the group, letting them know where they stand with the goals.
Flexibility
- Things change, especially when you have aggressive goals, so being flexible in this situation will keep you in control. With a level head and team support, you can figure out the roadblock, and how to get back on track.
